Matt McPhail from Pacifica's Gearhead shop sent me the following message yesterday night, regarding the long-awaited, oft-discussed Pacifica bikepark:
At last night's City Council meeting, the park was discussed at great length. All five council members voiced their support for the project and agreed to "jump start" the bureaucratic process of making it happen. It looks like we'll have an official dirt park by next spring! The really cool part is that it was a bunch of eight-to-twelve year old kids with crappy bikes, building dirt jumps on their own, that got the council discussing this again. Over the last year or two a whole new crop of groms has been getting into BMX in Pacifica, and everyday after school they've been digging jumps in the vacant lot next to Gearhead. A few weeks ago the city bulldozed them and the kids went right back to work. The Mayor and the President of the Parks Commission were made aware of the situation and they agreed that the city should be ENCOURAGING riding. In the words of the Parks Commission President: "This is bull****! If we've got bulldozers out here we should be building jumps, not tearing them down!" I couldn't agree more. If anyone wants to get involved in fundraising, design, or whatever, contact me at
gearheadbicycles@yahoo.com. We really need T-shirt and sticker designs if anyone wants to volunteer some skills. Also, if anyone's got a portable box jump or quarter pipe for fundraising demos, let me know. In case you're wondering, nothing is off the table terrain wise. We'd love to have some serious 'crete poured and it could definitely happen, but there's no money right now. It looks like we'll have the space to do it in the future though. Much thanks to everyone who showed up to support the cause last night!
