Cheapo tires but decent performance?

I'm looking for a set of el cheapo tres for the road so I can just thrash them around and not care about them. I'll be saving a set of maxxis or michy's for the good stuff.

I found this at performance - IRC Mythos XC ATB folding tire,
cheap or cheaper?

I've had the mythos before, and they've been great. For 12.98, not too shabby.. but the combo offer has 3 for $39.99. Buy 3 and save? If I buy them seperately, it still comes out to $38.94, you end up saving a buck. Oooook?

Any other suggestions/good deals you guys have out there?

Also found the kenda kinetics for $11.99, but I donno about that one.

Hutchinson Mosquito/ Mosquito Gold
Jenson $8, wire bead
Performance Bike $9.98, blk sidewall, folding
MTBR Review

Maxxis MoFo
Cambria set of 4/$60, 26x2.35, rear specific
MTBR Review
My review:
The MoFos are a wonderful tire for any off road application. With the volume of knobs on this tire, I find there is quite a bit of rolling resistance on the street. However, they will definitely stand up to much thrashing. 4 tires for $60+tax+ship is a great price for a quality tire like the MoFo.

Also, check Michelin Wild Gripper tires on same Cambria Sale: Tire page.

Wildgripper XL $10 each or 4 / $32. This is about as cheap as new tires are to be had... unless you camped on eBay and looked for stellar(rare) deals.

Wow, thanks for the links Daryl. Looks like you've done your homework. I think I may stick with the IRC Mythos... they are folding, so I'm assuming that means kevlar bead right?

Yup. IRC Tires use a Kevlar bead which is foldable. One thing I am interested to investigate is whether a tire with folding bead has any more or less rim holding power than a wire bead.

I'll let you know - but I think it depends. The one time I ran IRC Mythos a long time ago, they were easy as hell to pull onto the rim and pull off the rim. Just slid on and slid off. But I bet at lower PSI's, they may not hold well..

That's just one thing that I love about my Maxxis as well. They're so stiff. I threw my High Roller, WTB Velociraptor and Motoraptor in the air, and when the came down... the maxxis almost acted like a wheel. Just bounced and rolled a bit. Strange though, the WTB's are a real b**** to put on. Blah.

The Maxxis Mobster XC 2.1 tires I have on the rims were difficult to remove for the first three, four times... then the bead started to loosen up and traces of rubber from bead edge started to separate from the actual bead when I run the tire lever under the bead and over the rim edge to unseat the tire. This did not affect the bead though. It just flakes off so my guess is that its excess rubber from manufacturing process. Dunno.

Park Tool has a new Heavy Duty Tire Lever. "Imma git me wun uh deez shyineh gieesmoz!"

I have a set of these, but not Park Tools. I haven't had to use them yet, but probably will soon when I move back to Schraedar valves. I'll let you know how they go. They definitely aren't for sliding around, but they'll be nice to pry up the tire. At least they won't break on me.

The Park tool levers have been quite nice however. I usually snap them in half when I try and pull off tires, but these have held up so far *knock on wood*
