What 2008-on Rims would you choose??

Been running the SingleTraks forever and never had a problem with them, ever.

So now my hope is to find Sun's still gonna produce them, or look a little closer at the Equalizer's.

Dt Swiss 6.1-D fits the width and profile, but they are a bit soft, and race specific.

Mavic's are a proven player, but I always have wished theem a little wider, closer to at least 29mm.

Lay some ideas on me here.

What have you seen you liked, and why?
What's everybody else around you running and why??

:147:

Thanks!!

I vote for not Sun due to the high walls and shallow wheelwells. I had hookworms on rhynolites and despised tire/tube changes.

Feeling you on that comment. A jacked up middle finger that's prone to pop out along with a tight beadseat and usually metal tire irons don't combine into expeditious repairs. Usually that's me you've heard the cussing from as it echo's around the valley into Lavelozza road. :09:

I can say though, I have never rolled a bead, even near 25psi. :147:

Ha, so it isn't just me!!!

Dinged a buddy's rear just fooling around the backside of Arastadero.
I was pissed, he seemed he didn't care, now I understand why.

Here's the current replacement for the SingleTracks...

I'm still here! For some reason Mozilla doesn't keep me logged into Ridemonkey or MSDHW so now I'm lazy and don't post since I have to log in every time. Lame excuse, I know.

As far as rims go...

I've always been a huge fan of Mavic 721's. They're light and super strong. Tasso's 823's are sweet as hell too. Those are prolly my top two rim choices. Or.... an I-9 set if I had money to blow.

What kind of riding and what bike are these rims for?

Your weak excuse is worse than mine, c-mon!!

*I sold my Stumpy Pro, and am pretty much keeping the singlespeed as a do-it-all bike. So pretty much b.s. rides around here, Santa Cruz, Downieville, Ashland, Portland, NorthStar.

I do miss the Stumpy, but just hated that I wanted to travel so much to use it, and for local, almost always grabbed the SS, even though it kills to climb with, it's soo much fun, and I don't have to care about setting up the shock pressure, rate, blah-blah-blah. Include the fact I'm not/can't go as big anymore, but still occasionally do play around, yeah, old habits and all those excuses...

I want another wheelset that will be like the older ones, a set that ended up costing me less than $X a year, including maintenance, so I'll stick with the strength, even with the due cost of the parts. Call it the "Rolex" logic if you will.

Chris King's been there for me as always. Even when I roasted a bearing (my fault) they got it to me way faster than anybody ever (thanks Chris D!!), and have earned my respect, friendship, referrals, etc, so I feel that since I know what they went through for the ISO-SS, it's money well spent.

**Besides, they do keep a couple friends employed, so why not support a friend's income, so they can feed me when I visit?? :D

I've used the SS countless times more than any other bike I have ever owned, so that to me says a lot.

Now, as far as the EX-823's, funny, because after yapping all over the place in the lounge with him, I got to thinking about his rims and couldn't find a reason to not reconsider them. Only reason I never got Mavic's was Sun kicked in with the Team Spec, so I had those, the bars, and the pedals for a while, remember.

Add to the fact the 823's can be powdercoated, like Shawn and Lars have been doing, and I'm hard pressed to not use 'em. Especially now that I went through and re-certified with them. Cripes, I beat the crud out of the shop set last year on my old Stumpy Pro when in Downieville, I still can't believe somebody's using them.

..then there's the EX-325 and 729's tugging at my pocket too..

..but the 823's do have a solid quality that cannot be argued with, huh??

Here's some drool ideas...
Why purple though Shawn??? :09:

Powdered Fox stuff...

Shawn's RootBeer Bike

..and as far as I-9's, nice, but why not use my possibilities with King again?

They've served me well, and are going to continue serving a family member well, for a lot of years to come.

*Only reason I'm upgrading (finally) is the ISO-SS's are out, and well, I'd rather just build up another killer wheelset.

They'll easily weigh a (small?) bit less than my current set-up. :D

Tasso, aren't your's something like 28mm wide??

Oh, and sorry 'bout the thumb...if it's any consolation, I've a neat little "X" scar from where they had to pin my ligament's back together on my "You're #1" finger. :D How're you supposed to hold a drink with no thumb anyhow. ;)

well so i dont have anything metric for some reason... and i didnt feel like pulling the tire at midnight when i leave tomorrow for a race... but my standard calipers tell me its 1.125 inches on the outer surface of the rim... and its like 25.4 mm/inch, which makes 28.575 mm outer surface to outer surface... minus the width of the rim wall... so 28 seems to make sense, maybe more like a true 27.something mounting surface to mounting surface... hope that helps some

2.5 maxxis tires look purdy on um, so do 2.3... if i were building up a do everything bike (with n* in the mix) id run these...

as for the hand... right now im in a soft cast... but post surgery ill have a hard cast... as a tinkerer ill make sure it has numerous attachments for cup holders/ hammering on car parts/ drawing sympathy

i dunno what kinda cast itll be material-wise... but im thinkin short wood screws left hangin out a lil bit and slide on attachments

and sponsor stickers

Thanks, that's what I thought, and ended up measuring myself while poking around in PTB.

Now I think it's pretty narrowed down.

It's down to 823's vs 729's.

Advantage to the 823's due to the screw it eyelets, if you know what you're doing and thread them in right, they distribute spoke load way better, so no more worries about eyelets...

..just make sure they've lock-tite on them and recheck every so often if truing.

:D

Dont be hating the swiss made. My EX 5.1s have been holding up for days. On an XT and Deore hub, they are solid. (Handbuilt ofcourse). DT has some dope new wheels.
The Champion FR2350 s are super solid. (Oh BTW they run for around $450) :147:

So yea, the Mavics are dope.

Let's keep the thread open, even though I already have my stuff pending???

Mavic EX-823's, 32 hole. Black.

Chris King SingleSpeed-ISO Hubset. Black.

DT-Swiss Champion Spokes, 252mm*, 14ga, Stainless w/ 16mm nipples.

*Specs came up with 252's front, and 252/253 rear, meh...
I've dropped 1mm before, shouldn't pose any issues, added benefit is only 1 spoke length to ever worry about, should I break anything.

I'll post up the teaser pics as soon as I have everything in hand, right now, just the rims have arrived.

Yes, I'm going for the (almost) all black stealth look again.

As a bait though, here's Kyle's 1x1 with 823's... :D

True. i weigh in at 125 so yea. Also im not ona dh bike. For DJ, DS, 4x, thy are beautiful.

Chase91, factory built wheels are usually not as strong as handbuilt. I still go with DTs.
