Old Yellow DeeMax Rear Hub Disassembly
|
|
This is a write up to take apart the old yellow DeeMax rear Hub to replace a certain bearing (See Pic 8).
I know I needed this, till I spent a while dinking with it, and I know D needs it.
Here we go.
1. Take off axel. Use two wrenches on either side. Twist the non-drive side and the drive side bolts counterclockwise (when facing each bolt). The non-drive side is a bolt that comes off, the other is connected to the axel. See Pics 1 & 2.
2. Pull the axel out from the drive side. Grab the drive side bolt (which is connected to the axel) and pull it up and out. See Pic 3.
3. Take off casset... no need to explian this. (I do this after taking out the axel because my casset tool needs to stick into the hub. It'd be better to do it before taking off the axel if your tool dosn't go in the hub.)
4. Pull freehub off. See Pic 4. Be careful not to loose the two pawls and the two small springs. See Pic 5. Also, be careful not to loose the washer that goes inbetween the freehub and the fixed hub thing...not sure of it's proper name. See Pic 6.
5. Now you have the freehub off. Using C-clip pliers (or Mavic's special tool, but I found the C-clip pliers to be much better) unscrew the freehub cap (...not sure on the proper name of this one either) by carefully twisting the cap with the C-clip pliers or mavic tool (See Pic 7) and and holding onto the freehub where the casset normally is.
6. And now we can see the bearing. See Pic 8. This is the one I needed to replace. To get it out I took the axel and stuck it through the freehub, on the opposite side that is shown in pic 8, with the end that has the fixed bolt first. I then tapped the axel with a hammer and the bearing slipped out. This ruins the bearing so only do it to get blown ones out.
7. To get a new one in. I start by barely pressing in the new barring and then putting the "free hub cap" back on. The cap presses on the bearing as it screws in and pushes the bearings back to their place.
8. Put it all back together!
I found this out through trial and error so no guarentees D!
Pics are in order of their numbers. Here are pics 1-5.
