Foes FXR

Just got back from a couple days in Moab. I happened to get my hands on a nicely built Foes FXR and was able to ride some fun trails. I was curious if anyone in this forum has any experience with the bike or if they'd heard anything about it. I found it quite fun, however the Curnutt was not tuned correctly for me, hence my curiousity. I think I may buy one in a couple months. Also, to my initial dismay, the bike had Avid Discs. However I found them to be quite powerful and wayyyy better then I expected.

How'd you like Moab?

Those look like nice bikes and if you've never used Avid's before, you'd be surprized if you use well set up Avid 8".
Those things are powerful

Haha, I'm gonna say haha after everything I say. haha
This is so amusing. haha

Glad to hear your goin with a FOES. All I here are good reviews on all of their bikes, with the exception of the zig-zag being way too flexy. Otherwise, I dont think you can go wrong with the curnutt. All it needs is to be tuned to the rider, after all it is the original spv valved shock. Good luck!

Moab was insane. Ive been there 4wheeling there but never biking. blew me away. What a playground! It was unseasonably hot (90s) which did sorta suck, but I had an awesome time. The Slick Rock Trail, besides being absolutely breathtaking in the beauty department, was way more tech then I expected. Forget the downhill, the uphills on that trail are plain scary. I cant believe I did the 12 mile loop (going the hard way) in under 3 hours and only had to get off my bike once. Never punished myself so much, but wow, I sure felt good finishing that and seeing all these in-shape bikers suffering while my lazy ass schooled em both up and down. But there are wall rides and drops, transfers, jumps everywhere. Porcupine Rim was a total blast. Like 5 miles of amazing downhill and it was shuttled!!! I did one other trail I cant remember the name of. Something like Appalooza or something. Burly! I was really wishing I had a DH bike on that thing. Some of the 5-6 foot drops felt way bigger then they were, and it was all loose boulders the way down. Im definitely going back there to ride as I found there is a serious DH following and they have shuttles almost everyday (not to mention a chairlift).

definitely think im gonna get one of the FXRs in a couple months once im moved. I think I'd set it up with a 6" fork to get the head angle a little slacker, although I know it was in its more upright position. Regardless, it was fun to toss around and with the seat lowered it railed the DH stuff pretty good. The Zoke was smooth but too flexy for my tastes. With better tires (had the Maxxis Minions, what pieces of shit) I think itd be one of the best epic bikes out there.

That trip sounds rad, man.
It's weird though, I've heard nothing but good things about the Minions in the dry, so I would think they would hook up quite nicely.

Attending UCSC, College Eight. Feel free to come ride with me.

Keep it rockin' Hub TV!!

I dunno what it was. Maybe the pressure was too high or something cause the guy who gave me the bike said they worked well out there. On the slickrock they were great, but in the loose dry stuff I was just sliding ALL OVER! Sometimes it was real fun cause it was predictable, but I mean going around simple little turns I was 2 wheel blazing it up. He explained how High Rollers rolled their side knobs too easily, which made sense to me but I'd rather have that happen then be sliding like im on ice. Letting down the pressure helped some but because I had less travel I wanted to play it safe and not flat. I will say, the FXR climbed like a madman. There was absolutely no bob unless I really hammered standing up, and even then it was trick. I cant wait to get out there with my DH bike and some Supertackys. Besides the incredible rolling resitence, you would be able to carve turns like your on sand paper.

Maybe im so used to the supertackys that I just forgot what regular duro tires do.

Yeah, what's the deal with the Minions? That's strange that they didn't work out for you. Granted.. I probably don't ride as hard as you do, but they seemed to hold up fine for me - only got to ride it once at Big Bear and once at Carlmont. Got the super tacky one too, a 2.5" rear. How do the super tacky's wear? I took them off the minute I got back.. I don't want to ride them on anything but dirt :D

Darren, isn't that a PITA to switch tires all the time?

If I ever had 2 tires for specific things, I would have to get another wheel....

I guess the one word that describes me is....

LAZY

Haha, I'm gonna say haha after everything I say. haha

they wear very quickly out in places like moab where the rock is like sand paper (literally). However on pavement they arent thhhhhat bad. I used to ride my dh bike to school and back everyday (8 miles each way) and I was always too lazy to swap tires. I went through quite a few pairs, but then again I got a ton of em for free. They lasted long enough that it wasnt all that annoying to replace them every so often. In dirt, they last quite a long time, but rock can chunk em pretty easily. Ill give up some rolling resitence and wear to have their amazing traction. Ill have to ride the minions again; for now i will write it off as too much pressure and being used to supertacky highrollers.

I am extremely lazy like you guys. I HATE swapping tires. For this reason, last year I bought a set of 2.1 IRC Kujos that I found for 9 bucks. I just couldn't ride on those tires for the street, they were so light that I forgot how to turn. It was the strangest feeling in the world. Then I bought a set of Mofos, 2.35. Again, a tad light, but not bad - they just totally sucked on the dirt. I still have the rear. Right now I have an older mobster and a high roller that I ride for everything, and they are nearly bald.. but they still pick up! They both grip so I could care less. If I had more money I'd have two wheelsets..

I don't get how you can ride your DH bike to school. You goto UCB? I hope you brought it with you into classes

i went to independent studies at berkeley high school. just brought the Foes into class. I used to be in very good shape and it wasnt a big deal riding there and back. I also only had class 3x a week and was riding trails every day. now I huff and puff going up my block on my Foes. having 27 gears in moab was a life saver. when I wasnt going down, I was in the easiest gear just spinning away. I got on my DH bike today and just winded the shit out of myself. Pushing 43 pounds of bike with supertackys on the pavement aint fun after riding a svelte (comparatively) freerider for a couple days.

The highrollers in 60duro wear pretty slow and roll pretty fast on the pavement. One tire I actually kinda like is the Arrow. I had them on my dual slalom bike cause it had 24" wheels and Maxxis didnt have their 24" stuff out at the time. They were pretty sticky and wore pretty fast on the road, but they hooked up in loose stuff "pretty" well. Mainly they were very predictable and easy to recover in.
