One thing I dont have much experience with is the Boxxer direct mount stems. Will someone please explain to me why such a great idea hasn't got on at all? Looking around at friends, coworkers, customers and the pits I just dont see anyone using these. Yet they are cheap, light, and some of the designs look very sturdy.
Advantages: Can be half the weight of a lightweight stem, direct mount so stiffer and more direct, not as frequent bar tweak (extra nice for racing), adjustable positions and height, cleaner look. Potentially stronger connection with the bike
Disadvantages: I dont like how some of the mounts actually dont touch the steerer, just the crown. Potentially more likely to twist the stanchions in the crowns. Less flexibilty with sizing and brands. Potentially not as strong connection with the bar. Finally, I could see that if the bolt pattern was slightly off, then your bar would be permanently tweaked.
So whats the deal? Are more Pros using this then I know of? Do they just not make them long enough? Why hasnt someone designed a stem that both bolts to the crown and bolts fullsize to the steerer as well? Maximum strength and rigitity? Im really looking for lightweight here with the improvement of lowering my stack height a little.
