hardtail questions

I want to buy a hard tail and have some questions. Im trying to decide between a mountain cycle rumble and a banshee scratch. I am 5'4" and want to ride mtn X and slalom, the occasional dirt jump and some skateparks(ramprats). I don't want to spend more than $800 total. Used would be fine. I know I want to make it singlespeed. What parts should I get and how should I go about buying them (used or new)? I ride a fully and am new to hardtails so I don't know all that much.

For Mt. X and DS, you want something middleweight to lightweight. I'd say a 4.5-6 lb frame. Many true dj frames are a bit beefier for the constant impacts and crashes. Chameleons are about 4.75 lbs, Yeti DJ's are ~6. The rumble is supposedly the "Chameleon-killer" (at least that's what a MC sales rep was pitching at SOC '04...) Chainstays should be pretty short as there's a lot of manualling involved with most courses. Most bikes I've raced have shorter chainstays around 16.5". For your height go with a small/med or short frame.

For racing, you'd want to run 8 or 9 speeds as most courses require downshifting as you speed up. People have raced SHR on SS before and done fine. For SS gearing, most people run a 2:1 ratio. You can by a SS kit or build one with an old cassette and PVC pipes. Some people like to keep the bars wide for SS to give them more leverage when mashing on the pedals while standing. Some DJ people like to keep bars nice and short for bar-spin tricks.

I can't say much for Banshee, but I know MC was going through corporate changes. The status of the company was in limbo for a bit, but they restructured instead.

My advise is intended to be impartial, but I am selling a Yeti DJ size regular/short for $250.

evil d.o.c.'s are good DJ/Street/park bikes. I believe they're really designed for 24" wheels with their high BB. The elevated chainstays allow more space for pedal and bashguard grinds. They're on the heavy side, too. I almost bought one but reverted back to a Chameleon. Cool factor on those frames are high. I also believe the BB is BMX-style. There are a few people on this board that rides a doc or once owned one (pbr).

It will chopper the frame out really bad no matter what bike you end up getting .

Just look at a Brooklyn park bike , there designed to be run like that and they still look all chopped out

Do not get a mountain cycle rumble, those bikes are terrible. i rode one for like two years and i hated it.

at least with their last design it had an uber steep headangle and had a lot of strength up front but a weak rear triangle. I have seen three rumbles including mine (multiple year's designs), with snapped rear triangles. Stay away from the rumble.
