what ryans trying to say is that you cant go by what a manufacturer tells you...

and as for the fork shock difference, the position of the shock doesnt matter, the shock isnt going perpendicular to the terrain, the wheel is (some of the time), and on a swd, its a high pivot single pivot, so the wheel does follow a similar path as the fork...

and for the size difference thing, ya... i know, but my fork didnt even give a hint in hell of fading at keystone, so an air shock on a shorter less high speed hit course would be aaaaaaaight...

p.s. i dont htink running an air shock is cool, sorta like running single plys on a dh bike on a rocky course like deer valley...:006:

Downhill racing is not an extreme sport.

unless youre into that sorta thing...

Max's point of the SWD being a single pivot and destroying the seal on an air Dhx is a good one. I'd be worried about reliabilty of that frame/shock combo.

organizedrage, it sounds like there was a misunderstanding over the phone with Fox since so many of us think otherwise. Or the dude on the phone simply didn't know what he was talking about.

in this fine sport we brethren call downhill, a rider want durability, not weight. therefore I say to you,

go for brawn (DHX 5.0 Sprung) and leave thy DHX air for those who choose the darker side of life (xc)

can I get an amen from the congregation?

sorry firefighter dude, you know youre my boy and all, but no amen...

i try to get my dh bike as light as possible without sacrificing performance or a race weekends worth of durablilty (i rebuild after each race if i can). so if a dhx air will get my through a race weekend and not hamper my performance (i can do that well enough on my own), and save me weight, then im all for it... but they just dont plain ol make one for the dhr, sooo, ill **** talk it until somethign changes (sorta like i **** talked everything that wasnt ironhorse for a long time, till i got a non ironhorse bike...), and until i know its proven enough that id buy one...

why is everyone so concerned about weight with downhill? wouldnt you want more weight so you could go downhill faster? or are you just a bunch of weight weenies like me when it comes to road racing?

Good call, Im going to go look on ebay for a 2000 stab deluxe which should push 46 pounds with a monster T. Lighter bikes are easier to ride and control. Some of you had the joy of riding downhill back when 44 pounds was race light, most of you probably didnt. We dreamed of bikes that didnt bob when pedaling and building that bike was a hassle since there were almost no compainies selling them complete. Get your freaking air shock. If it saves weight then do it. Your not going to break it. Its not going to blow out and if it does seal kits are 20 bucks and a tub of slick honey cheap as well.

lighter bikes are nimbler and quicker. It is also much easer to throw around a 38lb bike for 4 minutes than it is to throw around a 45lb bike. Look at the trend...DH bikes are evolving...bikes like V10s are becoming extinct to some extent, and more people are racing bike like Intense Socom...and doing really well on the.

I'm also gonna tackle this one before somebody jumps on my for saying it. I know Steve Peat and Nathan Rennie are riding V10s, but think about it. Lots of people run shorter i-2-i shocks on those bikes to reduce travel, drop the BB and slacken the HTA. Also consider the evolution of the bike itself. Version 1 had tubing, was real heavy and felt pretty much dead, worked real well on straight up rough, but the biggest benefit of version 2 was reduced weight and that it felt "more alive." So now we are looking at version 3, it weighs even less, it is partially carbon fiber and is designed to sit higher in the travel to again feel more alive.

The fact is the days of big smash bikes like Karpiels is over. Professional downhiller are racing on smaller and lighter bikes. The entire
