bike lights for street rigs

Hi y'all,
With the days getting shorter, I'm in need of a bike light. I commute through a downtown area, so I want to be seen by traffic. However, I do want to hit up the street stuff along the way. On occasion I have to dump the bike on tricks gone wrong. My concern is a bar mounted light would get thrashed.
What do y'all do for night commutes/street sessions? I know most real street sessions don't require lights, but given all the stereotypical suburban SUV driving, mobile phone talking brainless knuckleheads not paying attention to where they drive, I need a bit of insurance.
Halogen head lamp? Maybe mount a regular cheapy LED bar light upside-down?
