My Brake Upgrades

Avid Disc front, Magura Hydraulic HS-33 Rim brake rear

Sorry for the poor image quality. Scanned photos I developed from a disposable camera. Need to invest in a DIGITAL CAMERA one day. Gift?

Got the Avid Ball Bearing Disc for sale at Beyondbikes.com for $75

... and the Full Metal Jacket disc kit

Magura HS-33 Hydraulic rim brakes - $115 on eBay
Koolstop red pads from Cambria for a whopping $30

The disc setup works great. Pads/rotor just starting to burnish so the stopping power is steadily improving. The Magura rim brakes were honestly the most challenging piece to install. Rim-to-pad accuracy must be dead flush to achieve any of the benefits of a hydraulic system (modulation, smooth lever stroke, etc.)

Thanks. I should have read the Picture Gallery post more carefully.

Check out the upgrades. So far so good. Disc front and hydraulic rear perform reliably in light rain, mud, dry conditions.

I'm trying my hand at some urban riding. So far I spend my time practicing various balance skills and controlled drops. Such as trackstand, hopping up tall curbs and benches, riding the sidewalk curb (just the 6 inches of curb between sidewalk and road), slow wheelie drops down 3-4ft curbs, the continuous wheelie (I have trouble with this one. Is it easier to manual??) I can easily clear a short length of stairs 6 feet out and 5 feet drop. I kinda lost interest in that one. There is another set of stairs on campus a good 15 feet out and 10 feet drop. I'm still working on that. :P

Wheelie? Manual? All practice. You'll probably find the magura hydraulics to be a big help though with modulation. Oh, if you want to look really good... wheelie/manual down a hill. That'll get you some distance :D

No cycling team. I know there is a cycling club, but very unorganized. The guys who run the bike maintenance M-F 12-1 ride XC, and I've met one or two that BMX all over campus. I did see one guy doing trials type moves near a loading dock on campus. Otherwise, I have not seen any other such riders around campus.
