So I told my parents I wanted to get into biking, and lo and behold, they surprise me with this beast for my birthday! Not sold in America, and right now it is stock (Avid BBDB brakes, SR Suntour front shocks, i think giant rear shock)
8 speed, couple of problems which i will post questions about elsewhere

My dad got it on a business trip to Taiwan. I should also fix the rear, cause last time I was JRA and the chain slackened so much that it dragged on the ground and got all dirty (but I made sure not to backpedal so it doesnt come off).

He does also... I think.
That definitely could be a great bike with a few upgrades. I would upgrade the fork if I were you and that's about it for now, maybe get a bash guard.
After that, that bike is great and you should just ride it until you have preogressed enough and you think the bike is holding you back. I also had one and upgraded it more than you'll have to because the parts they put stock on there are better than what came on mine.
ANYWAYS...... The rear shock is an HV shock I'm guessing (what came on mine)... It's a cheapo giant made shock but works fine for that frame (I wouldnt upgrade)

Haha, I'm gonna say haha after everything I say. haha

Im ine extreme debt right now, so there wont be any major upgrades yet. The first thing I will change though is the fork, I want to get a steel coil shock. After that I will probably get a new bike altogether, but that wont be for a few years at the very least.

dont get a new shock, that shock will work fine and by the time you notice that it really does suck and you need a new one, you will be good enough to realize you need a new bike

you can turn a little nob which pretty much locks that shock out
