I read Dirt Rag for the articles, and Flow for the pictures.
|
|
I read Dirt Rag solely for the articles (all ads in Dirt Rag appear in the other bike mags).
I read Flow for the photos and ads.
I read Mountain Bike or Mountain Bike United Kingdom (MBUK) for product reviews.
I read Playboy for the photos and articles.

While I was in the UK and Paris last November, I picked up all the mags I could get.
“dirt” ( www.dirtmag.co.uk) was the comparable to “Flow”. “Mountin Biking UK” ( www.mbuk.co.uk) was the best all-around UK mag followed by “What Mountain Bike” ( www.whatmtb.co.uk) and “Mountain Bike Rider” ( www.mountainbikerider.co.uk), which have virtually no web-counterpart.
The only French mag I found is called “Velo Tout Terrain”. I couldn’t find a website, but I did find www.velovert.com I would think this would be good for some of y’all taking French.
As far as US/Can mags, MBAction makes me want to buy parts, BIKE makes me want to go ride, Flow makes me look at concrete structures differently, and Mountain Biking/Bicycling give me a different perspective when I tire of the others. Unfortunately I’ve only read a few issues of Flow, whereas I subscribed to MBA when I was researching parts and building my current bike, and Bike when I was all done building. Now it’s back to MBA. Too bad it takes them over 4-6 weeks to start up a subscription…

Attn: "flow" back on newsstands
|
|
flow magazine issue Spring 2004 is on newsstands. I do not know the release date, but this is the first time I've seen it available in months (i.e. the last time I saw an issue was September 2003 for Fall 2003 issue.)
FYI, I found it at Fry's Electronics Palo Alto.
Here's a letter from the associate publisher of flow:
Quote:
Greetings and welcome to the first issue of the new and improved FLOW magazine! For those of you who don't know already, I have recently joined Challenge Publications to take our magazines to new levels in the industry.
With FLOW, our aim is to create a magazine with a much broader appeal. A magazine that reaches beyond the small huddle of core bike enthusiasts to entice the vast masses of young, savvy urbanites, and other sport enthusiasts into our world. Our goal is to create a magazine that is an artsy mix of cultural and social imagery mixed with global mountain bike events and unique rider profiles.
FLOW endeavors to be a publication that gives cycling companies a quality venue to reach new target audiences of sophisticated readers that have never before been interested in a bike specific magazine. It will also serve to help bike enthusiast readers all across the globe to learn more about this rapidly growing sport.
It is time for a top-rated bike magazine to become visible to the rest of the world.
It's FLOW time!!!

A few thoughts...
Perhaps some of you are thinking this is sounding pretty cool, just as I have thought after reading this message. However, I hope some of you will also consider how far reaching this vision can become, and how it will affect our lives day-to-day off the trail. The magazine may soon be able to carry bike companies to even higher levels of profitability. While companies like Shimano, Hayes, Iron Horse, and mail order shops BeyondBikes.com and CambriaBike.com benefit from reaching an even larger market of consumers, it will push our local bike shops further and further into the ground (unless your LBS happens to be BeyondBikes or CambriaBikeOutfitter).
After reading this magazine, I again find myself at odds between being both a rider and consumer. I want to see growth in the sport of cycling. Additionally, I make a concerted effort to be a conscious consumer in two specific aspects: (1) I see new products featured in the mag but do I really need it? (is it a necessary expense or a luxury?) (2) Where am I likely to purchase bikes+parts? Online or at LBS? I also think about how much will I save by not purchasing parts from my LBS? Who benefits from my purchase: Some seller in San Diego, CA or my neighbor/LBS owner across town?
Think consciously. Shop consciously. Your purchase will positively or negatively affect the livlihood of those around you.

DIRT magazine from the U.K. is by far the best that I have seen. The american magazines are crap compared to DIRT. But it only comes out 6 times a year and is hard to find.
