So most of you have seen my bike. Yesterday I went to the REI used gear sale and got a pair of mtb shoes (cannondale, if memory serves correctly) for 6 bucks (looks like they may have been worn once or twice, but whatever, I alread have all the awesome foot diseases). they have a mounting bracket thing for cleats. My friend is willing o sell me some new clipless pedals and the cleats (shimano-and you can use them without clipping in) for $70, plus ignoring the ~$35 I owe him. I mostly do downhill and jumping, but I often ride to the top of trails. Are the worth it?
PS, I know its a great deal, hte pedals retail for $100 at Talbots. But is it worth it for me??

Clipless is ALLL personal preference.... try em out on someone elses bike then decide or if you think you can sell the pedals for good money, do the deal and if you dont like it then just sell the stuff

That's a tough call. I would say give them an honest try and ride them in all conditions and types of riding. You might prefer them for only certain styles of riding over platforms.
Personally, I've been riding clipless for 7 years now, and I couldn't ride without them.

this is getting pretty stupid, everybody is gettin clipless pedals. do you guys know why they were made? it's so not only can you push down on your pedals, you can also PULL UP. this is so you can supposedly go faster (which you do) but, those muscles that are used to pull up are really weak so it'll take a lot of time before you can ACTUALLY take advantage of clipless pedals.
so before you go out and blow 50$ on some pedals you don't know how to use, think about it
NOTE-not aimed directly to Mattpace, but just in general all the people that are wanting these clipless pedals.
:sad6: for rant

Can you smell it?
They are also to actually keep your feet on the pedals when going down rough terrian. Weak muscles to pull up? Gotta build 'em up sometime... :31:

I think you should try them out. I wouldn't wear them for DJ, Urban, freeride. But say, DH courses, XC, that's where they may work better for a particular person. Some even think of them as cheating ;) Give them a shot, but keep a set of platforms. I don't think anybody hates clipless if they're riding uphill. Downhill can be another story.

That's basically it.
I'd go for it and see if you like them and what you like them for.
Personally, I wouldnt mind using them for almost anything except crazy steep stuff like World Cup in Santa Cruz and urban they wouldnt be good for. DJing and freeride (drops + DJs like Carlmont) are fine on them for me, as I said... it's all personal preference.
As for the muscles, that's not VERY true... I do agree they aren't as strong as they should be for you to get the full effect of your clipless but I have gained speed and control with my bike because of clipless.

true about the muscles, but im betting some ppl that have bought clipless don't really know what they're for.
as for keeping your feet on pedals-i suppose that oculd be a perk sometimes, but that's definately not the intent of them, and you should be able to keep your feet on the pedals anyways :261:
you should not really be GAINING TOO much control with clipless. sure you can pivot your back wheel easy, and some stuff is a little easier, but it won't really make a big difference.

Try doing downhill, for instance G-Out Hill at GGG4 with platforms on a hardtail or even a fully, and then come back and say that you weren't worried at least a little about your feet coming off. Why do you honestly think so many downhillers use them? For the uphill? Come on man...Think a little before you tell somebody "facts" about them... :lame:

What are clipless pedals for then? I put them on my Karpiel to make it look cool, since the pedals used to be red. I thought the red matched really well with my swingarm.
I don't understand why you are hating others for using clipless bud. You gonna hate all the pros that use them too? If you don't like them, that's cool.. but state why you don't like them, why they did not work for you. There's no need to tell us how they're supposed to be used. Some people use them to bunnyhop. Others use them on their road bikes. And still others use them to haul ass down DH trails at mach 10.
How are they not made to keep your feet on the pedals? Everytime you click your shoes into the pedal, it stays there in that one specific spot. Well, pretty much, you're allowed some movement. That's where your pedaling efficiency is the best, the "sweet spot."
The bottom line is, some people ride better with platforms. Others choose clipless. It is personal preference like said above.
