the lesser of 2 evils

Im going to college, and I need a bike (im not riding the Giant between classes...). Im thinking of getting a huffy or mongoose from target or something (since itll probably get stolen in college anyways) new for ~100, taking off the decals, and repainting it, so no one would have to know I ride a **** mobile. Ive been lurking the classifieds here, getting peoples hopes up with a possible sale, and letting them down. Question is, what company is the least crap for the least money?. Im looking to get into trials and some bmx/street... but if it can handle some dirt too thatd be awesome (like my friends GT Bump or a Specialized Fat Boy, but less pricey.). Im on a budget of owing my parents $970 , so cheaper=better.

i saw a road bike for 10, but it definitly needed a whole new drivetrain before id achieve 10 mph. It was like one large chunk of chipped broken rust

Look around for USED BMX bikes... the new Mongeese are all crap, regardless of price. Their BMX bikes will bend and break before you know it, so look into a used BMX bike and look for:
3-piece cranks
steel frame, regardless
decent rims (more spokes the better)

That's my reccomendation.

Holy crip it's a crapple!
