I woud do as chris says, think about getting a shorter stem, maybe a 70mm thomson with 10 degree rise... and some lower bars... High bars will not help you one bit... People think that they do but it is really a disadvantage! but sick bike, and maybe ride the talas a little lower, The bike is sick tho!

Definitely what I was thinking and did...
|
|
I'm ok with the bars for now, but yeah, that steerer needed to be cut, no way around it and yeah, I run the fork at 3-4" usually.
The reasons it looked that way was I'd just built it and at the same time overhauled the fork to remedy a problem with the helical screw on the talas side being burred from some schmuck twisting it all the way in without pushing down on the fork at the same time saying "Dude, your fork sucks, the travel adjust doesn't work." I didn't want to pay Fox for something I'm capable of fixing. (Note to self: NEVER LET KIDS OR CUSTOMERS HAVE EASY ACCESS TO MY BIKE. These are the same type of people who force trigger/twist shifters to their limits on the sales floor...without pedaling the bike.)
I took it out briefly yesterday, but due to a bad case of the flu, had to stop because I couldn't stop coughing. I'll put some more time in on it later and post my impressions. As far as the Revell, ummm, yeah, about that, the frame was welded crooked and they didn't seem too interested in listening to me. Visa gonna get me my money back, and that'll offset the cost of the Surly. Revell's UK office is talking about taking care of me too, so I kinda thought "What should I do with the Revell", but I think it's gonna stay in it's frame box in case Visa or Revell send a call tag for it. If not it's gonna end up as a nice powdercoat red wind chime, or I'll sell off what they send me. Watch for a classifieds ad.
So to end on a happy note, who want's to do a single speed ride?

Ok, just make me totally jealous, walk out front right now with a camera, take a picture of all the trees, forest, skyline, and post it. I went to UCSC for a few classes and miss it so much. Enjoy it, it's a great school. OH, and the trails around campus ROCK!

So here's the finished product...
|
|
Dropped the fork, removed the excess steerer spacers, swapped in a new bb, crankset and 32t salsa ring. Running 32x17 so it's not too hard to pedal uphill and can maintain a decent speed. I'm gonna get a 16t cog also to play with.

Okay, i think i figured out why this ride looks so whacked out...
Don't get me wrong, that thing looks solid. Its a sick build for sure. I just think it could look a lot more pretty with a little tweaking.
My Advice:
get rid of your waterbottle holder
buy some black QR skewers and flip them flush with the frame and fork
get rid of that shop sticker on your down tube
cut another half inch off your steer tube
remove your fork decals
and for christs sake, lower that seat ;)

Man maybe you guys don't understand the purpose of this bike. It's a trailbike, not a jump bike. Knowing shane and the type of riding he does, this bike is set up perfectly (besides my personal dislike for hussefelts).
Kevin,
The waterbottle holder is there for water on long trail rides
QRs... picky, picky:09:
Telling a man to take stickers off his ride? Wheres the respect?
Steerer tube+seat heights are great for trail riding.
I dig the bike.

Come on, you know what it takes to get that particular sticker from Yuba Expeditions! You gotta understand the "whole picture" a little more. It's a single speed, who cares what it looks like. QR's silver, yeah, but they work, and as hot as I get my rotors riding sometimes, I put them how they work best when moving the rear wheel or fixing flats.
I feel the same about the Hussefelts, but when you break a crank and bb using the "Downieville Downgrade" rule in the rockgarden,(ok Zoran say it..."Told ya so")you buy or use what's on hand so you can ride the next day. Luckily I had these on hand from another build. It makes a wonderful all purpose single speed, and when the seats lowered flies like a bat outta hell. I'm probably going to break my Shimano boycott and pick up a set of Hone's or Saint's. Race Face's stuffs had way too many issues this season.
FYI-No record time set, but aside from destroying the left crankarm on the rock garden on the first run, everything else survived riding ButcherRanch to First and Second Divide on three different shuttle runs. Oh, and yeah, riding a singlespeed up the fire road from second divide past the tennis courts into town sucked. Having two shots of Don Julio given to you by the bartender for free didn't.
These two stickers that follow, red on white and forest service brown on white they'll hand out to anyone for a couple of bucks, or swag if you're a friend of the Yuba Expeditions peeps.
But...The one on the frame is an orange on white sticker, that says "Downieville Classic", is just like the blue on white one top finishers get,
"You earn it.", it isn't handed to you for nothing.
It isn't always about fashion, but thanks for the input.
