I will def second that. Its addicting in more ways than one. The thrill, the people, and the places. I try not to think about the money, but everytime i hit up a liine at SHR or even in the local open space, i can feel the cash flying off my back tire, and its worth every second.

Expensive indeed, but we are also getting to a point in R&D where you don't need to replace your bike every two years just to keep up with technology. I'm still in my heavy spending phase becasue I still want to finish my DJ bike and then build a trail bike. After that everything will be just keeping up. Last year my heaviest spending was on kiteboarding But I haven't spent one red cent on the sport (other than gasoline and wetsuit repair) for a long time now. Granted based on my priorities I will continue to spend ever spare buck I have on biking but hopefully most of it will be on travel instead of equipment once I have my quiver completed:
XC Hardtail (have it, currently has been sacrificed to the DJ gods, but will be put back together.)
FR/DH bike (got my bullit, love it no problems)
DJ/Urban (my new love affair, rideable as is, still needs appropriate wheels and fork)
*Trail bike (not yet, looking at a nomad or a six pack, or maybe even an enduro, nothing too pussy)
**Big Rig, non-pedalable DH monster (in the distant future when my bullit is getting tired, I may separate my DH/FR bike into two, one for ripping local fun runs that is built a little lighter and such and another dedicated to ski-lifts, gondolas, and shuttle trucks with big travel, lots of beef, and fully active suspension)
10000 dollars later. I have arrived.

On bikes and bike parts/accessories, I'm around $8,700 since 1999. If you add in lift tix, repairs, bike mags, DVD, and all the gas to get to the trails, then... forget it- I don't want to think about it.
Several people I know bought nice cars as a present to themselves for graduation. I built a Bullit.

Ive prolly spent over 5 grand. Bighit was 1300, probably about a grand put into that bike including fork and rar shock rebuilds and upgrades. Got the hardrock and the steelhead, alltogether bikes only Ive prolly spent like 3 grand + like 2 for parts/ upgrades/ and rebuilds (shock/fork) Then prolly another grand for gear, (broken helemets, outgrowing armour, thousands of pairs of gloves, jerseys, etc.) Also spent quite a bit on lift tickets/season passes. for N*, Brianhead, Mammoth and others. Prolly around 7 ish g's in all. But thats not what its all about anyhoo! :18:

I'm going to tell myself $5,000 to ease the pain but I know it's closer to $10,000 -- 3 years, four bikes bought and sold with one left, and two whistler trips later.

I definitely spent a lot, but the irony is that my wheelchair cost way more than all the biking stuff put together. Still, I'd say that I'm probbably around ten or twelve grand, if not more. And yes, it was worth every damn penny.
