NORBA has a set of rules to race if there isnt an SS class and you wanna ride SS. It's something like::
You must have 2 of the 3:
1)Front and rear brakes.
2)26" front wheel.
3)more than like 2-3 working gears.
If you have two of those, your good to go.

Im pretty sure you need at least 3 working gears, but i cant remember any official ever looking at my bike to see if its legal. You can probly pull it off but there is a slight risk of being disqualified.

Email or call the sanctioning body..

I know there's a heated debate on this subject. I had to switch mine over for slalom a few years back. Funny, huh? There's SS class in other disciplines.

I'll see if I can find anything out, if you get an answer, let me know (via pm), as I'm deciding if I want to sneak in and compete.

Here's the link I have for the "RuleBook"*:

http://www.usacycling.org/forms/NORBA_rulebook.pdf

*note: the start of the pdf files is blank, just scroll down to the contents page, etc.

I've an idea for you...

I have a derailleur tug-set, a spare Sram 9 speed cassette and x-9 shifter from my old Kona. I'm bringing them in case I enter anything last minute, I'll post a pic, so you've an idea on how to solve the issue. If it's indeed a 3-4 gear minimum, just use only the spider, and none of the last 3 gears, just be sure you're running at least a 36 or 38 in front, and have enough spare chain to hook it all up.(IE: Sram chain, 2 quick links, and enough extra chain to fill the gap.)

pics to follow.

Well, i was talking about 4x. Sorry. The rule for slolam is as follows:

3B8. Bikes must have atleast three working gears.

Exploit the "Interpretation " Clause...

Exploit the "Interpretation " Clause-"It has 3 gears, they all work fine. Yes, I've used it this way in races."

*Personally, I'd have 2 cogs in back instead, that just looks wrong.
