Resurrect Red Devil as a Pump Track??
|
|
~As some of you know, Red Devil's been shut down indefinitely. Between the liability, and the "Other" pre-existing problems, the city, and P.D. cracked down really hard the last 18 months, and it comes down to "Rolling the Dice" and risking a fine, and bike impounding.
Personally, having grown up in this area, I honestly think that some sort of BMX/Pump Track needs to be resurrected so the local community has a place to play and develop riding skills. (Not to mention the fact that it'll boost the local shops' business.) Basically, we're trying to get Union City/Parks-Rec to let us re-legalize Red Devil, just no more 6 packs, so the community has a place to play again.
Thanks in Advance!!
*Anyone who's local to me, get in touch, we need signatures to prove we're not b.s.ing around.
**Even if this means you'll come here to ride it, as it counts, as you'll likely use the local businesses for food, etc. at Union Landing.
***Posting a positive vote means it'll be something that we can hand the city as a preliminary signature batch.
If you have specific concerns, thoughts, experiences, please keep them brief, and appropriate, as like I said, this'll probably end up in City Hall's hands.
Again, Thanks in Advance!!

sounds like another Calabazas Thing. The more public support you can gain, will shift the city's thoughts from what Red Devil used to be to what it CAN be.
Im in.

Yep, a pump track is ideal. Fun and SAFE. We just built one at a state park in Colorado. That's a great precedent.

Why haven't the jumps been plowed then? The jumps have received a lot of work the last couple of months. I haven't been there for a couple of weeks now but I have been hitting RD the last 3 months or so a couple times a week with no problems.
Does the city plan on plowing these jumps? I would rather have a pump track than no jumps but I would prefer the jumps that are there now to any pump track.

just keep riding it the way it is. i know plenty of people that ride there all the time and never have any problems. those jumps are dialed. we don't need another pussy pump track for girls and kids. we need more big jumps.

just my two cents, but its attitudes like this ^ toward jump spots that brings them to the city's attention, just like calabazas, sh*t kept getting bigger ( Im not complainin) and kids started gettin hurt and now theres no cali for anyone. Id rather have a fun - legal pump track that will be there for years to come, then some sketchy jump spot with a few fun dubs that will be gone in 2 months. SO yes it may not be as much fun for you or I Curtis but for 70% of other riders it will be enjoyable.
P.S. BTW you gotta hit me up and check out our spots!

Well put Curtis. After talking to a couple friends today, it seems to be at the point where a few friendly people in the city, and police dept are giving it a "What is R.D.? There's nothing there. No harm, no foul." approach. As long as things stay as mellow as they've been recently, it most likely will survive another winter. It's been up on the hit list at least twice in the last four years.
Seriously, look at how mellow the Jam went down. Personally, I am not looking to see any of what's there killed. Just have a plan in place should the city actually follow through take a tractor to it all. the residents in the last couple of houses apparently have grown to allow this place. My biggest concern is with all the side construction going on at the merge of the creek at Dyer and Alvarado. Know what I mean? It would be like "Well the equipment's already here..." I grew through my teens riding there, and want to see things still there if I ever have kids, so they too can enjoy it..

Needless to say it's provided me the time off the bike to keep up to date on local access stuff.

This is "Why things Will be changing there" as put to me by a local pair of moms...11/28/06
We swung through today, and had the pleasure of one of the local mom's talking to us. Apparently the residents are still wanting the "mess" cleaned up. There's feral cats, cat poo, and "trash" all over. Then there's "the trash, needles, homeless encampment, and vagrants using a motor home at the entrance", etc.
They've (the homeowners) a rightful reason to be pushing for things to change here. I know if I had a house, and kids there, I would be just as concerned. Who want's their house broken into, or their kids messed with, not to mention, kids will be kids, and it's just a matter of time before they pick up a used needle, or worse, know what I mean. I couldn't give the woman an appropriate reply, "I completely understand." was all I could say.
I'm stuck in the middle here on this one.
If you ride there, and see shady stuff going on, do what you want to, just remember "Would you want this "nonsence, drugs, etc" in your backyard?" as the lady said.

I can appreciate how the local residents feel but how is a pump track going to change anything?

Seems like the jumps are the one posotive thing going there. The cops can get rid of the bums and the crackheads, animal control can get rid of the cats, the trash can be cleaned up.what would plowing the place do except get rid of the GOOD people that use the area?Makes no sense to me.

Pump tracks are fine and would be great at a local park within the community. I don't see the logic in tearing down one of the best DJ spots in the Bay Area for a pump track??? Yes, there are ****ty people that hang out at Devils but ride at your own risk. I ride there on my lunch hours and even after work. I have seen the wanna be thugs and just give a chuckle. I always say hello and have not experienced any weird vibes. Yes, there are some special bush people out there but to me it represents the most challenging DJ's in the area. I would be bummed to see it go. It is a more advanced spot but it's been there for a long time and deserves to be there for old farts like me hanging on to my youth but especially for the young up and comers to progress and take the sport further.
Just my two cents.
