Get a Specialize, even if its an older one with a 24inch rear.
Specializeds are WAY better, FSR suspension Rocks. and if you break their frame, they will replace it for FREE! FSR is a Better Race Bike, and is a Better Bike all around.
Kona's just plain suck, they rattle, break, crappy customer service. the single pivot design is Crap. they come with Cruddy Kona parts that break. They look ugly, and people who ride them are Generally Noobs, or Called noobs, because people who ride Kona's tend to suck.
Specialized ALL the way

The Coiler is more of an all-mountain/black diamond bike. The Big Hit is more of a freeride/dh bike. Go w/ the BH if you are looking for a FR/DH bike. If you have to earn all your gravity assisted runs, then be prepared to push uphill or consider an AM bike.
As for personal preference between the two choices, big hit is the way to go. Consider resale value. Big hits are more common, so resale is more difficult given the surplus on the market. As of right now, there are 8-10 big hits on craigslist compared to 0 coiler bikes.

Brian lopes rides for gt and eric carter rides for mongoose. Thats a good enough reason for me to go down to walmart and get one. I bet all those guys ride for specialized just because the bikes are so good, not becuase they get paid or anything. Toolbag! :09:
I would say get whatever color you like. Im on my second specialized and i wont ride a kona simply because im a bike snob. either choice is a good one. Ride them both. Get whichever one fits better.

coilers kinda suck but konas are good bikes but so are specialized its just all in the frame style you like and the best deal you can find. just 2 let u know that the big hits nickname is the big sh!t, not my opinion just putting it out there.

is that a serious question?
ill put it this way, the konas ride like a tin donkey on pcp... aka rattley and ****ty but totally immune to pain...
the big **** is a really good bike, itll take anything you can throw at it, but it needs slightly more upkeep than the kona, which isnt saying much, cause the konas are kinda like marz forks... basically a big hunk of steel... impossible to break but lame performance and weight...
the only half decent rider that rides a kona is barel, and his is about as much kona as i am black... not at all... that should say something about the way the bikes perform...
but if youre not gonna do maintnence, get a kona, itll handle the neglect a lil better... and everyone should do maintnence...

Downhill racing is not an extreme sport.
unless youre into that sorta thing...
