theres no reason you cant use a full downhill bike for freeride, and you cant really use a freeride bike for downhill very well... so just get a downhill bike and schralp... i rock a turner... but almost all dh bikes will pin if youre willing to get rowdy... i would just warn you not to get anything too old, or too heavy... some people rediculously overbuild frames... but any of the big names is good.

giant glory, tuner dhr, morewood izimu dh, special ed demo 8, ironhorse sunday (but for gods sakes dont get green... even sam hill has gotten over that stage), tha cove dh bike... v10...

Downhill racing is not an extreme sport.

unless youre into that sorta thing...

Whatever direction you go, try and go used, and try to build it up yourself. It will provide an opportunity to learn the in's and out's of your first FR/DH bike. Chances are, you'll want to change it up as your skill progress. After a while, you might find your first choice of bike might not match your style. Going used will allow you to keep the budget in check, too. Just keep in mind that your bike will need to be forgiving as you learn FR skill. Look for a good amount of cushion and equal amount of strength.
