Hey guys,
I go to UC Davis and as you know everyone has a bike here. Tired of riding my dads old bike that I've put slicks on and want to build up a fixie. Just front brake, horn handlebars, and thats it. Anyone know of any good places to start or anyone to talk to? Any people selling any fixies? I'm 6' tall. Let me know.
Oz
P.S. Fitment should be the same as a road bike correct?

I want one too. I know a lot of guys on the Wheelmen team here at poly who sport them to class. I was talkin to them and they said they spent about $200 on what they could find. Most of the money is spent on the frame and the wheels. They're very different to ride but a ton of fun.

I just built one up to get around Boulder...so I'll lend a few tips.
Cheapest way:
1. Find an old road bike at a garage sale/bike co-op/other place-make sure it fits like a road bike should, or even a little small
2. Strip all geared parts from the bike
3. Remove freewheel (because its old, remember) and spin on a fixed cog and use an english threaded bottom bracket lockring to hold it on.
5. Flip the drop bars upside down and cut off the rounds
6. You now have a fixed gear!!!
A much better route to go is to get a fixed rear hub, as the threads for the lockring are reverse so there is much less chance of you loosing your cog while trying to slow down. You can get a cheap fixed wheelset online (about 120 front and rear), pm me for info on where. Any of ther questions or if you need parts, let me know.
Edit: I could also sell the one a just built up, but its a 54cm...

I rode my first fixie at Sea Otter the other day called a Swobo Sanchez. I dont know much about them but they seem like hella fun to mess / commute around on. they're $600 on their wbsite Swobo.com. My friend just ordered one so it should be here in a few days and ill post an update. they also have some fixie parts on there too, check it out.-Cody

fixies are fun... and they make you strong. Something about the whole idea of having one gear and having to pedal all the time that just rocks my socks.

I'm building a fixie right now (I got a screaming deal on an old school Jamis Durango bike off CL). I really don't feel comfortable about locking my BigHit or STP out in front of a store, so I'm building this as a grocery getter/towner.
It's going to be sick!

I want one too (being a track and road racer), but I am spending my money on a giant vt 2 so I can start mountain biking again. Craigslist has a bunch of good looking fixies for cheap.

Very nice! I thought you were going with a road bike style fixie but this is much better.

I'm replacing the frame with this one and going with some "moustache" bars.
