Your thoughts on my new hardtail DH
|
|
I ordered my new hardtail frame for FR/DH tonight and I am pretty stoked. I am still debating on two things, wether to go with 3 inch wide tires and a fox 40RC2, or go a more mild route with intense fro's and a 32 talas RC2. I think since I allready have a DHR I might go with the mild route. both forks are still a through axle design but two different styles.
I am going to race it in the hartail classes at most of the local series (CCCX, CHDH) and I am choosing fox just because I allready run the 40 and the talas on my 5 spot and DHR. not only that, I would have a backup fork in case of blowouts at the races. I am not building it just for this area either, It will be used in most of the other states I ride.
what do you guys think?

3" tires are overkill in any situation. there is a point where if you run a bigger tire your traction will be almost the same, you'll just go slower, and in my opinion that size is 2.7. Also, the last place you want to add weight to your bike is the wheels. Oh, and I think the 36 would be an excellent choice of fork for such a bike. You work in PA? haha i live here, we should go ride.:13:
late.

go with the 36 talas rc2... you can even do some hella intense DH with those and they are good for everything else also... better all around.... the 40's are a bit over kill and same with the 3 inch wide tires. i think 2.4-2.7 is plenty good and good luck with the bike! you live in palo alto? i do to, i go to gunn high. right next to the veterans hospital. the evils are pretty nice and can take a beating. one of my friends has one and it is rides super nice : )

Get the 36 for sure. Altough the Imperial is prolly one of the best frames to put a double crown on a 40 will unbalance any hardtail. Not to mention the 36 would fit that frame perfect. 3" Tires are pointless like Chris said, you'll just roll slower and if you plan on racing this bike thats no good. Get dual 2.5's for racing, best combo of good traction and little rolling resistance. Post some pics and such once its built, sounds like a sweet hardtail.:147:

When I had my Imperial, I ran a Sherman Breakout and 2.5 tires. You should be fine with a 36 and since those Intense tires are pretty burly, 2.5's would be ok.
If you need a reducer headset, let me know. I have a FSA Orbit Extreme 1.5R sitting in a box out in the garage.

I've owned three Imperials over the years and have run about everything on them. Have to say it felt the best with a Monster T on it. I've run a 7" Sherman Breakout SC, 6" Sherman DC, Marzocchi 5" SC and various others. Hands down the bigger the better with those bad boys. Enjoy!!
